• The handle rotates without resistance. This usually means the square drive shaft has sheared at the plate connection, a common failure in HS-TD units after 15-20 years of thermal cycling. The plate itself may still be intact, but there’s no mechanical link to move it.
• You feel cold air entering the firebox when the damper is “closed.” The plate has warped or the frame seat has corroded, leaving a gap that defeats the seal.
